How do I communicate the location of an incident?
A misunderstood location costs minutes in an operation. How to communicate locations precisely — over the radio and with the 360° app.
A location that is misunderstood costs minutes in an operation. So use several channels in parallel.
Over the radio: you get immediate attention
- Drawbacks: often hard to understand, rarely practised, the channel may be busy
- Fall back to mobile phone when the channel is busy or intelligibility is poor
Where does the 360º app help?
- Create an incident or an alert as an action at the same time — the location is placed directly on the map (“place action on map”) or taken from GPS
- The location is then exact and documented, lands as an open activity in the operations centre’s backlog, and its status can be tracked (Open → In progress → Completed)
- In other words: it is not a replacement for the radio, but a supporting tool
How the app helps you communicate a location over the radio
- Your own map material: A grid gives you orientation and a shared language — everyone talks about the same grid squares.
- GIS layers per mission: Posts, POIs, lines and polygons (or a GeoJSON upload) make fixed points such as “Medical post North” directly referenceable on the map.
Summary
Use several channels when needed — each channel has pros and cons:
- Radio: immediate attention
- App: grid map as an aid, the incident as a documented location
